Finding Balance-What We are Watching

I’m all about finding balance in all aspects of life, including taking some time to decompress and enjoy some good TV.  If you know me, I rarely take the time to just sit and relax.  I’m wired to constantly be busy but at the end of a long day, I have to admit I enjoy unwinding with my one of my favorite shows.

With the Golden Globes airing the other night, I had a chance to reflect on what I am truly enjoying watching these days and I can honestly say, it wasn’t any of the shows featured during the awards show.  TV is an escape for me, which means when I sit down to watch it, I don’t want to add any unnecessary stress or drama that’s going to keep me awake at night.  Don’t get me wrong. I was a Film major so I can appreciate the acting, writing and production value of some of those shows, but in the end, I just want to veg out and not have to think.

This means I’m usually watching guilty pleasure shows like The Bachelor where I can just sit back and watch other people try to find love on TV.  I know I’m not alone here but I also know that you either love or hate the Bachelor and that’s okay.  We can still be friends:)

I love a good drama with a great plot line that can evoke emotions or make you connect with the characters.  This is Us has been a favorite of mine from the beginning and I have recently found A Million Little Things this season and I am hooked!  I love shows that can make you laugh or cry when the whole time you are just rooting for the main characters.

With a preteen daughter usually lurking around the TV, Disney channel is also on repeat, however, we try to find shows that we can watch together and enjoy.  Andi Mack is a great example of a show we can watch and talk about together.  If you were a fan of Full House growing up and have kids now, you definitely need to check out Fuller House on Netflix.  Brings back all the best parts of the original while introducing some of our favorite characters to a new generation.  Plus, there’s always a life lesson in each episode.

This season, we stumbled upon a new show called God Friended Me.  The premise seemed far fetched initially but our daughter wanted to check it out so we started watching as a family.  The show is family friendly enough for her to enjoy as well while learning some great lessons about selflessness and God’s purpose for us.  Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t yet.

While the Bachelor is my guilty pleasure, we also have our family reality shows that we all enjoy together.  Over the years, we have watched Survivor (how does Jeff Probst never age?), The Amazing Race, The Voice, American Idol, and of course, Big Brother.  With Celebrity Big Brother debuting in a few weeks, I think our DVR is about to go on overload.  You can also find my TV regularly parked on HGTV or Hallmark Channel during the holidays.

TV should never replace quality time together but sometimes it can provide the escape we need from reality and can even evoke the conversations that we need to have.  It should never control your life but, let’s face it, who doesn’t need a little guilty pleasure in our crazy lives right now.  I would love to hear any of your recommendations in the comments section.  For now, I have a date with my couch and The Bachelor.  With a 3 hour premiere, it’s going to take me all week to get through it.  Enjoy friends!
